Ehime “Hime Daruma” (Princess Daruma) — Traditional Folk Craft from Matsuyama

Hime Daruma is a charming traditional craft beloved in Ehime Prefecture, especially around Matsuyama City.

Origin
According to local legend, Empress Jingū stayed at Dōgo Onsen for healing, and later gave birth safely to Emperor Ōjin. This Hime Daruma is said to be modeled after the Empress.

Good Fortune Meaning
Daruma symbolizes resilience — it always rises again after falling. For this reason, it is also known as an “okiagari” figure and is treasured as a lucky charm for:

  • fertility and safe childbirth

  • family safety

  • recovery from illness

  • victory and success (Empress Jingū is also associated with winning and good fortune in challenges)

This princess wears a kimono decorated with an auspicious crane motif, a symbol of longevity and good luck.

Papier-mâché (washi paper) with lacquer and painted finish
