This wall art is made from a fukuro obi originally designed to match formal kimono.
A collaboration piece with Japanese creator Kplas.nl, based in the Netherlands.
Mukai-Oshidori (Paired Mandarin Ducks)
This textile artwork features Mukai-Oshidori, an auspicious Japanese motif depicting two mandarin ducks facing one another.
In Japanese culture, mandarin ducks symbolize marital harmony, deep affection, and enduring love. Their devoted partnership gave rise to the expression “oshidori couple,” representing an inseparable and loving marriage. For this reason, the motif has long been used in formal kimono and ceremonial obi, especially in wedding attire and tomesode.
The design typically portrays a male and female duck gazing toward each other, expressing unity and balance.
Transformed from a formal obi, this art piece carries the blessing of harmony and lifelong love into your living space.
It is not only visually striking, but also rich in cultural meaning — a timeless symbol of connection and togetherness.
Tatewaku (Rising Steam Motif)
Tatewaku is a traditional Japanese pattern characterized by flowing, vertical wave-like lines that gently expand and narrow as they rise.
The name literally means “rising steam,” inspired by the image of steam ascending gracefully into the air. Because of this upward movement, the pattern has long symbolized growth, elevation, prosperity, and positive energy.
Often used in formal textiles and court garments since ancient times, Tatewaku carries an elegant rhythm and a sense of refined dignity.
Its continuous upward flow brings a feeling of movement and harmony, making it both dynamic and timeless in design.
